Give yourself a fun title

Years ago I gave myself a title: The Force of Calm. At that point, it felt painfully inaccurate. I was anxious and tense most of the time, as I have been for most of my adult life. It kind of fitted for how I looked like on the outside, but inside I felt completely different.

As I continued to get familiar with what it really meant to be a Force of Calm, this title became a reminder for me: whenever I became aware of the tension and the worry, I’d tell myself “I’m a Force of Calm” and it helped me relax. In time, just like any other title or identity you give yourself, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. I became much more calm and all the other things I associate with this title. Not 24/7, but more and more of the time.

You too can choose who you want to be. And if you do, this will inform how you’ll behave.
This is one of those little things about goal-setting, that we don’t usually learn. When we set goals, we list things we want, projects we want to complete, dreams we want to live. But what we really want, is a feeling state, a way of being. So who do you long to be when you complete your goal? Here’s where your chosen title comes in.

You can see your chosen title as your inner alarm clock. Whenever you need a wake-up call, remind yourself of it. It will start to condition you to act accordingly.

What is it that you long to be? A Joyful Leader? A life-giving Creator? Peace on Wheels? See what quality you long to embody with your most desired goal and find a fun title that matches it. Even if it doesn’t fit you right now for the majority of time, you already have the seeds of it at your core. Otherwise it wouldn’t attract you as much as it does.

Hugs,
