Would you jump off a cliff? For most people, the answer is no (daredevils and basejumpers aside). Now if you knew that someone or something would catch you and you landed safe no matter what, would you jump? Answering “yes” might just got a whole lot easier.
When we trust that someone or something is there to catch us or bail us out when we most need it, taking action is easier. The certainty of help, eliminates most of the risks associated with the unknown outcome of any action. And since no one ever knows the future, everything that is not happening right now -a.k.a. the future- is unknown. It is trust that can take away the fear of the uncertainty.
But what if we’ve never had that someone we can trust or we didn’t grow up learning how to trust Life? Luckily, we don’t need to have had it as a kid to be able to benefit from it. Trusting is a skill we can learn and develop. We just need to find our way to open up the flow.
If you have difficulty trusting that you’ll have help when you need it, try looking for events where you DID trust something or someone. Even if it’s just a tiny thing, just a moment of trust. For example, knowing that the next time you’ll be sad, your cat will come and sit on your lap purring. Or trusting that when you get hungry again, there will be food in your kitchen. Whatever it is and however small it is, notice it. Make it a practice to look for those moments and whenever possible, to extend more trust towards others.
If you really can’t think of even the tiniest moment of trust, try to look for a situation, where you received trust. Again, it can be as small as someone opening up for a minute to tell you how they really feel. That takes trust. Or an animal coming to you and letting you pet them. There needs to be trust in your kindness for them to do that. Make this a practice, where you look for moments of receiving trust.
Whichever way is easier for you, putting more attention on the experience of trust, whether it’s receiving or giving it, will open up your ability to experience trust, little by little. You’ll open up the flow of trust into your life.
By feeling more trust in your days, you’ll feel more secure in taking action as well. The possible outcomes, even the scary ones, will feel less daunting, when you trust that you’ll be okay, no matter what. This is exactly what we need, when we are trying to shift our lives towards a more fulfilling one.
