Where do we use our energy?

It’s still quiet here. Even though people are up, my boys are up, there are cars driving by, but I feel quiet and peaceful. The wind relaxed finally, so its moaning doesn’t overwhelm other sounds.

Birds are chirping loudly. Spring is in the air, even though the weather is still cold and gray most of the times. The birds feel it. The trees feel it. Even people feel it. Spring is inevitably coming, even if the grim fingers of winter try to hang on to every branch and windowsill around with all its might.

But even something as powerful and unstoppable as winter, needs to give in to the ever-changing nature of our world. It’s here in one moment, gone in the next. Seasons come and go, as the saying states. The next time winter arrives again, it won’t be the same winter as it was this time around.

So why would we, humans, who are much less powerful than the seasons, cling onto the idea of keeping the same, even pace and flow in our lives day in and day out? Why can’t we accept the ebbs and flows of doing and being?

The cycle of seasons come naturally. Our cycles of productivity are the same. As in, if we allow it.

Monotone, always predictable productivity is the false promise of safety from the factories. They live in this false sense of predictability, as if it guaranteed safety. But it doesn’t.

We can find safety, we can find our home in the cycles that come naturally. In the changes that are inevitable. Because those constant changes made our very own evolution possible. And with our evolution came the ability to survive in this world. Nature and life has been around for a considerable time, and the wisdom it holds surpasses our human wisdom by far. So let’s try to get a glimpse of a lesson from nature’s cycles.

Embracing the constant change has made it possible for our species to survive and to keep moving forward with our evolution. Therefore safety is in moving with the change. Safety is in accepting the ebbs and flows, of getting more and more familiar with the cycles that naturally come and go.

If we keep working and pushing against these natural cycles, these natural forces, things start to break. We get exhausted, unhealthy, unhappy. And of course we do! We are putting a tremendous amount of effort into changing the unchangable and controlling the uncontrollable. All the time wasting energy that we could use to create projects that really matter to us.

This is the challenge: Do we go against the man-made system, or do we push against nature?

It’s our choice.
